Majolica offers the perfect synthesis of painting techniques and ceramic technologies. Deface re-imagines majolica’s historical use as a means of painting representational imagery on functional ceramics, and replaces the traditional portrait with one of contemporary life. I was trying to convey emotion and representational detail with majolica, pushing a voyeuristic glimpse into an anonymous life. This genre painting offers the viewer an emotional, vulnerable figure.

Our personal narratives are constantly arranged and re-arranged as information processed and understood by those around us. Tropes plays with these subjective (re) interpretations. There are three ceramic sculptures with illustrative sgraffito decoration. The blocks and their imagery are unified through narrative flow, and the pieces can be placed together based on the images’ relationships to each other and their interlocking shape, or they can be willfully arranged as desired.
